Emergent Length-Generalization on Aigarth's Substrate
June 2026. A controlled, reproducible study of emergent size-generalizing computation on a boolean cellular substrate. Proposed decomposition (a hypothesis, not a proven theorem): for a computation that must generalize to unbounded input size, every component of the algorithm can be made to emerge by mutation and selection on small examples alone, and exactly one primitive (bare iterate-and-check) cannot. Fifteen phases, each checked far beyond training size, plus a pre-registered noise law that was once falsified and refined. Novelty is methodological, not phenomenal; prior art is named throughout.
Emergent Length-Generalization on Aigarth's Substrate
1. Statement
Hypothesis: for a computation that must generalize to unbounded input size, every component of the algorithm can be made to emerge by mutation and selection on small examples alone, and exactly one primitive cannot. There is no formal model or proof; we demonstrate each component constructively for selected tasks, on a boolean cellular substrate, with exact verification and generalization to inputs far beyond any seen in training.

| the carry direction / information flow | yes | Phase 3 (5/5, bit-exact to 512) |
| the dimensionality of the wiring (2-D) | yes | Phase 5 (12/12 rank-2, exact to 32×32) |
| the connectivity vs distractors | yes | Phase 6/7 (local link recovered; affine address found) |

| composition of a primitive (the wiring) | yes | Phase 11/12 (one adder → 6 capabilities) |
| higher-order structure (shift-and-add) | yes | Phase 13 (multiplication discovered) |
| the loop flow (2-D nested loop) | yes | Phase 14 (the array-multiplier flow) |
| the loop bound / when to stop | yes | Phase 15 (8/8 self-halt at exactly W+1, to width 32) |
| the bare "iterate-and-check" capability | no | logically entailed by unbounded input (Section 4) |
2. What the large random checks show, and what they do not
Every "emerges" above is checked by exact match on inputs far larger than training. Phase 9 checks each invented machine on 20,000 random strings at each of lengths 16, 32, 64, 128 (80,000 strings). Earlier versions argued that a rule correct on 99% of random strings would pass all 80,000 only with probability 0.99^80000 ≈ 10^−349, and called this decisive for all lengths. That does not hold: the figure assumes one particular kind of independent random failure, and a program can still fail at lengths that were not tested. The checks show correctness on the tested lengths. Where we read the evolved machine's transition table directly and it equals a known finite-state machine, correctness for all lengths follows from that reading, not from the random tests.
3. The phases
Phase 1, the cell function (a modified Anna-like substrate). One module evolved by selection only on 2-bit addition (16 examples), then tiled with a single binary inter-tile channel, computes N-bit addition exactly for every N tested up to 128, never trained beyond width 2. 6/6 seeds length-generalize (exhaustive to W=10, then 500,000 random pairs each at W=16/32/64/128); all 6 emerged modules are the identical exact full adder; found in 136–434 evaluations. A 20-seed robustness run added 20/20 (to W=16), so 26/26 independent seeds. Controls make it more than an anecdote: (A) a redundant 2-channel interface overfits the training width (3/4 fail by W=8); (B) a random unevolved module fails 2-bit addition outright (16/16 wrong); (C) flat monolithic evolution cannot length-generalize at all. Subtraction also generalizes (5/5 to W=16). The interface must match the task's carried-state complexity: 3-operand addition has a carry that reaches the value 2, so it needs a ternary channel (4/4 to W=16); a binary channel cannot even fit the training task.
Phase 3, the carry direction. On a boolean CGP substrate where each cell can read both neighbours, every seed converges to a left-only channel (correct low-to-high carry). 5/5 generalize from W=2 training, bit-exact at W=64/128/256/512 (2,052,000 bits at W=512, zero wrong).
Phase 4, topology under over-provisioning. With spare registers and 8 candidate channels, naive search generalizes 2/12, but a footprint-minimizing (compression) walk lifts this to 9/12, and every footprint-1 winner uses the carry-direction offset.
Phase 5, the wiring dimensionality (the cleanest result). Task: 2-D parity-prefix (a mod-2 integral image), provably impossible for any 1-D wiring. With compression, 12/12 seeds use exactly the {N, W, NW} directions with verified matrix rank 2, exact from 2×2 through 32×32. Correctness here is itself a proof of dimensionality.
Phase 6/7, connectivity and addressing. Phase 6: from a menu including a non-spatial global broadcast distractor, the compressed search recovers the single local link in 8/8 winners. Phase 7: with no menu, each cell reads cell a·i + b with (a, b) evolved; 15/15 discover a=1, b=−1 (the predecessor) and generalize to W=32. (Honest caveat: a control shows non-chain addressings cannot even fit the training task, so the chain is the unique solvable one, not a free choice.)
Phase 8, the pre-registered noise law (falsified, then refined). Prediction: emergence is clean when the task has a unique causal basin and noisy when the substrate is over-provisioned and the task admits a width-specific overfit. The "noisy" half failed on a new task (cumulative OR-scan), forcing the refinement that over-provisioning alone is insufficient, it must coincide with overfit-ability. Phase 8b confirmed this within one task by varying training width (clean lift from 8/12 to 12/12). A law that survived its own falsification is the only honest form of a "law" here.
Phase 9, an invented internal representation (first discovery, not recovery). Running mod-3 divisibility with a blank register, trained on lengths {3,4,5}: 12/12 generalize exactly (zero errors exhaustively to length 12 and on 80,000 random strings). Each seed invents its own representation, 9/12 the minimal 3-state machine, 3/12 a redundant 4-state machine, with four distinct residue encodings.
Phase 10, task-generality on a fixed substrate. Divisibility by k for k in {2,3,4,5}: mod-2/3/4 all generalize to 128; mod-5 did not solve within budget (flagged as a search-budget edge, not a capacity limit).
Phase 11/12, composition. A frozen full adder composes into six generalizing capabilities (to width 30): ADD, SUB, INC, DEC, NEG, and GE, the subtractor read at its borrow-out is the comparator. Phase 12b shows selection self-assembles them, with success tracking solution density.
Phase 13, higher-order structure. Over a frozen accumulate skeleton, 2 of 12 outer programs compute exact N×M to width 16, shift-and-add discovered. (Honest: the accumulate skeleton is supplied.)
Phase 14, the loop flow. With a frozen multiplier cell and a bare grid, exactly 1 of 16 direction pairs computes N×M to width 12 (accumulator from above, carry from the side), the array-multiplier flow.
Phase 15, the loop bound. With a per-cell done bit and halt-on-consensus, 8/8 compute the sum and self-terminate at every width to 32; at width 16 every input halts at exactly step 17 = W+1. The stopping rule is self-timed.
Beyond the core, Phases 16–27 extend the ladder (in-context storage and recall; few-shot inductive learning identified as version-space elimination; an unsupervised world-model; a viable-agent dark-room ablation; multi-agent co-evolution novelty; a causal self-model; a concept-learning taxonomy with parity as the provable per-bit boundary; and a mechanistic-interpretability instrument that scores attribution methods against a decidable oracle). These are recorded with the same honesty about prior art and effect sizes.
4. The one thing that we argue cannot emerge
The bare iterate-and-check primitive (apply a uniform rule repeatedly and halt on a state predicate). The argument is informal and has not been formalised: it is a finite-description limit, not a search-budget limit: a finite genome that generalizes to unbounded input must reuse a finite rule across the input, that is, it must iterate. Consuming an unbounded input requires repeating a read, and stopping requires checking a condition. So the iterate-and-check capability is the precondition for there being any generalizing computation to emerge at all; it cannot itself emerge from nothing while being what makes emergence possible.
5. Methodology
Two substrates: (a) a ternary lookup-table cellular automaton modelled on Anna.exe (100 cells, 100 steps, control-cell halting; our port is not faithful to the binary, see Chapter 34), used for the Phase-1 tiled adder; and (b) a boolean Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) feed-forward circuit, evaluated exactly over the full truth table, used for the emergence ladder (the ternary ring stalls at W=2, so the ladder needs a substrate where exact verification stays cheap). Selection is a gradient-free (1+λ) evolutionary search (typically λ=6, with multi-restart), child accepted if error ≤ parent (neutral drift allowed); several phases add a footprint-minimizing compression walk. Generalization is verified by exhaustive enumeration at small sizes and large random samples (2,000–500,000 inputs) at sizes far beyond training, checked bit-exactly against a trusted reference; the black box is opened by reading the evolved cell's truth table to confirm it equals the textbook recurrence.
6. Novelty (stated against prior art)
The novelty is methodological: the exactly-decidable, exhaustively-verifiable substrate with matched controls and pre-registration, plus the unification of a ladder previously shown piecemeal and approximately. Named predecessors include Kashtan & Alon (2005, the noise-law substrate), Clune, Mouret & Lipson (2013, connection-cost modularity), Miller & Thompson (2000, evolved arithmetic), Fogel (1966, evolved FSM), Beer (2003, evolved internal representation), Thompson (1996, selection invents structure), and Mitchell (version-space elimination, the emerged few-shot learner). The one narrow candidate-new identification is reading an emerged few-shot learner bit-exactly as a known symbolic algorithm; even this is flagged pending a citation-graph check before any "first."
7. Scope and what is not claimed
This is emergent generalizing computation, demonstrated and bounded, not "AI found," not consciousness. The developmental scaffold (one tiled module, one channel, a fixed readout), the grid geometry, the neighbour menus, and the accumulate skeleton are supplied, not emergent. This is emergence given a reuse prior. The contribution is the proposed decomposition (a hypothesis), the irreducibility argument, and the pre-registered noise law, each backed by constructive and reproducible experiments; runnable scripts (a zero-dependency verifier plus the numpy phase scripts and a README) are published at /data/emergence-artifacts/.
